The start of the academic year is always signalled by the Association for Dental Education in Europe (ADEE) conference which took place in Barcelona. It was the biggest conference yet for ADEE with over 500 delegates attending. The theme of the conference was “Science and the competent dentist: an inter-professional perspective” and was held at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Barcelona, Spain from the 24th-26th August 2016.
Birmingham was once again well represented by Prof Damien Walmsley, Immediate Past President and Prof Deborah White, Editor of the European Journal of Dental Education. Upen Patel is the lead organiser of “Dental Educators on the Move” and the group had both a pre-conference workshop and a special interest group during the conference. Other delegates included Prof Giles Perryer and Mrs Lynne Reynolds. The European Dental Students Association also held their conference in Barcelona and Andrew Kalli, the magazine editor was sighted around the conference as well. The conference was exciting covering topics from European – American collaborations to the effective teaching of clinical skills.
The social events took place in the magnificent surroundings of the University of Barcelona close to the centre of the city. The conference had a number of firsts including a new format to the programme. There was also the first inaugural meeting of ADEE with the Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE) and the joint meeting discussed Inter professional education with speakers from both Dentistry and Medicine.
