On the 26th January 2017, the BUDSS committee were proud to host the 131st Annual Dental Ball! This event is always the highlight of the year, which the entire Dental School including staff and students look forward to months in advance. The black tie event is always held in beautiful venues such as the Council House and Edgbaston Cricket Ground. Due to its resounding success as a venue last year, it was decided to hold the event again in the Cricket Ground; this time with the room overlooking the stadium itself.
Every year there is a theme for the ball, and this year ‘Lost in the Woods’ was the most desired choice. This theme involved life sized cherry blossoms, lights and foliage; all of which made the venue look stunning and gave the night a botanical, elegant feel. I’m sure everyone would agree that it felt truly magical entering the venue and feeling like you’d been transported into the woods.
Upon receiving a drink on entry, the guests were lead to their tables, all of which had individual names such as Sherwood Forest, Majestic Magnolia and One Hundred Acre Wood. While the guests enjoyed a three-course meal, a saxophone player was treating everyone to brilliant jazz music. Having a live performer really added personal touch to the night. A raffle was held following speeches where people could win some great prizes, and this raised over £200. This money went to a brilliant cause, St Mary’s Hospice. Alongside the meal the guests could indulge in a large chocolate fountain and treats. A large ice sculpture of a bear also stood proudly in the venue. This really added to the wow factor of the night. As well as being a beautiful addition to the décor, it also provided a lot of fun as it had a side role of being a vodka luge. We’re sure some people might have said it was a bit too fun however the next morning!
There was a professional photographer who took some lovely photos of the guests as they entered, as well as a photo booth, where people could dress up and take funny photos. This was great as people could have both official and fun photographs to remember their night and have something to keep and take away as lasting memories. The night ended on a high with everyone making their way to the dance floor to dance the night away. This Dental Ball was the biggest and best to date and we can’t wait for the next!
Just to let you know that the exact figure for how much we raised in the raffle at the Dental Ball was £281.85
